The cost of Airport Express from Hong Kong Airport to Hong Kong station is HKD 100 (approximately USD 13) one way. I will tell you how you can save more than HKD 75 on this journey just by traveling an alternate route from Hong Kong Airport to city center and back.
- Walk to the airport bus station and board bus numbered S1 run by New Lantao Bus company and get down at Tung Chung bus terminus. The cost of journey is HKD 3.5
- Walk to the Tung Chung MTR station which is just adjacent to the bus terminus and buy a ticket to Hong Kong MTR on MTR Tung Chung Line (yellow line). The cost of journey is HKD 20.3 on Octopus card and HKD 23.0 if you are on a single journey ticket.
- If you are staying on the Kowloon side, board the Tung Chung Line and get down at Lai King MTR. Here change the line to MTR Tsuen Wan Line (red line) and get down at Tsim Sha Tsui MRT. The cost of whole journey is HKD 15.2 on Octopus card and HKD 17.5 on single journey ticket.
You are saving more than HKD 75 (if one way) and HKD 150 (if return) buy just traveling an alternate route. Now, boast about your achievement with the other backpackers and have a drink at Lan Kwai Fong.

Yes, the buses have space to store big luggage and no one objects you when you take it in the metro rail. Though they might check your baggage for security reasons.
The best option to stay if your backpacking is any of the hostels in Chungking Mansions.
