How Indian citizens can obtain a passport
A passport is a document without which you will not be able to travel internationally. A passport for a citizen of India will be issued by the Government of India.
Previously, obtaining a passport was a lengthy and heavy-duty process. But with the computerization of the passport centers, it has now become much easier.
Documents required for obtaining a passport
- Proof of Address (any two) – water bill / telephone bill / electricity bill / bank passbook or one year bank statement / income tax assessment order / election commission voter id card / certificate of employment if working for a reputed company / spouse passport copy / current ration card / Aadhar card
- Proof of Date of Birth
Case I (if born after 1989) – birth certificate issued by Municipal authority
Case II (if born before 1989) (any one) – birth certificate issued by Municipal authority / school leaving certificate or college leaving certificate or certificate of recognized educational boards / affidavit sworn before a magistrate or notary stating date and place of birth
Applying a passport at District Passport Cell (DPC)
- Download passport application form and fill in the correct details.
- Go to your respective DPC and submit the completed application form along with two self attested photographs (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm), documents listed above (both original and self attested photocopy) and a demand draft. Here is the list of District Passport Cell.
- After submitting the above, collect the acknowledgement letter, which contains a file number. You can use this file number to track the status of passport application.
Applying an Indian passport online
- Register your application on Passport Portal Service and log-in, using the registered log-in id.
- Click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport” and fill in all the correct details and submit.
- Click on “Pay and Schedule Appointment” where you can schedule a date and pay the fees. Print the application receipt.
- On the appointed day visit the Passport Seva Kendra along with the application receipt, two self attested photographs (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) and documents listed above (both original and self attested photocopy). Here is the address of Passport Seva Kendra.
- Track the status of application – Same as Step 3 in the above.
Cost of passport application in India
- Normal Scheme – INR 1500 (36 pages) and INR 2000 (60 pages)
- Tatkal Scheme – INR 3500 (36 pages) and INR 4000 (60 pages)
